Eggless French toast | Egg-free French toast

This eggless French toast is lightly crisp on the outside, pillowy and custardy on the inside. Enjoy it with a drizzle of maple syrup and your favorite toppings!

Hello folks!

Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year 2018!! May you have a year that is filled with love, happiness, good health and of course good food ! 🙂

Let me begin my first post for this year with these eggless French toasts 🙂  If you love French toast, but avoid it due to eggs? Then this recipe is just for you.I usually make the conventional French toasts with eggs, just like the ones I used to have as a kid. So when I came across an egg-free version, I was really intrigued. In this eggless French toast recipe, eggs are replaced with cornstarch.

Would it work by simply swapping the eggs with cornstarch?  I set to test it out, and the verdict – It was just as great as the ones made with eggs. The cornstarch and sugar lend a nice crust to these eggless French toasts.  This is truly a great alternative to still make some French toast if one ever runs out of eggs or simply can’t have eggs due to dietary restrictions!

Let me tell you, this recipe is a keeper. I used custard powder instead of the cornstarch since I always have some sitting in my pantry. The custard powder has a yellow tinge, due to which the batter becomes a light yellow, that looks just the regular egg-milk batter! These eggless French toasts are slightly crunchy on the outside, pillow-y & custard-y on the inside, kissed with some maple syrup!! Yumm! Who wouldn’t like to wake up to such a breakfast? I put my Hubby to the test and asked him how he liked it.  He said it was great, to which I further asked him if he realized this was an eggless version? And he said he really couldn’t find much difference :). Mission accomplished !!

Make sure you do not over dredge the bread slices in the batter or else it tends to get too soggy. Just a few seconds each side in the batter is more than enough, shake off excess. Go ahead and try this recipe, it’s so easy to whip up and even quicker to devour it all 😀

Step by step instructions

1.Preheat the griddle/ non-stick skillet over medium heat.

2.Combine all the ingredients in a shallow bowl, except for the bread and butter. Mix well to make sure the cornstarch/custard powder has dissolved.

3.Dip both sides of each bread slice into the mixture, just enough to coat both the sides. Remove it before it gets soaked completely.

4.Melt butter in the skillet over medium heat. Cook coated bread slice until it is golden brown on one side, then flip and cook the side. Depending on the size of your pan, you may cook in batches. Prepare the rest of the French toast in the same way. Remember to whisk the batter each time before using as cornstarch has a tendency to settle at the bottom. Serve immediately, drizzled with a sweetener and toppings of your choice.

What a great idea, Freda! I think I need to get some custard powder and give it a try. Even though I love eggs, sometimes I run a little short on them and never knew there was another way! Brilliant!

I think it would work with pudding mix that is available here too, coz that is cornstarch as well right? You may want to try using that instead of buying a packet of custard powder 🙂 Thanks, Laura!
